We’re anticipating 8,000 people will come to the show to see the vehicles, commercial displays, raffles, trophies and other activities. The RVSR members work all year to make this a special event for participants and our community. Whether as an entrant or a spectator we know you will enjoy the show.

In addition to being a fun and entertaining event, a primary purpose for the presentation of the show is to generate a substantial donation to the Child Development and Rehabilitation Center (CDRC) of the Oregon Health & Science University. This fine organization has been helping deserving kids and their families for over 37 years.

The CDRC primarily treats kids who have diagnoses of either cerebral palsy or developmental delay. Many children with spinal bifida,behavioral problems craniofacial disorders or genetic syndrome also receive treatment from CDRC. We are very proud to have been able to cumulatively donated over $500,000.00.

So, if you’d like to join the fun and participate in our show, send us your application. There’s no entry fee if you are selected. The show committee of the Rogue Valley Street Rods selects the final entrants and places them in the venue. Their decisions are final.

membership were encouraged to donate jackets, hats, scarves and gloves to the needy of the Greater Medford area. Our involvement began over 5 years ago with the number collected continually increasing. The program interest was caught up by member, Marcie Kappner’s Mom who this last year hand knit more than 100 hats. The RVSR club members want to extend special thanks to Gini for her spear heading this great cause, recognize Dana Bailey, Katy Whilhite and Debbie Fleck for their helpful assistance.

Our planning for this year’s event began in 2010 when it was uncertain we would be in the area or available to participate. It was not until late last year we were able to plan the entrance of our ’34 Ford Roadster we placed right below the new ‘Half-a-Car’ sign with matching paint scheme. With new President, Bill Andrews heading the club,

Past Show Chrmn. Bert Roberts, managing the show, Mark’tg Chrmn, Ron Peil on board and many of the members handling the same positions, planning began early. As usual, the Medford area received ‘fake spring’ weather with 55 to 70’s sunny days in the preceding couple of weeks. Then cooler temps, rain, and a small snow dropping gave us grave concern for the show weekend. Did we get lucky, by 9am, Friday, set-up day, the sun broke through and all entrants were able to arrive in the dry to begin their displays. By 7pm, the Expo Fairgrounds arena was full of 100’s of rods, customs, bikes, club displays and Karts, Specialty Vehicles, along with the Valve Cover Racing Track, the Kids Room for coloring contests, the club T Shirt table, the ever popular Raffle table with prizes and the entrants registration table.

All 3 of the adjacent buildings were full of a great assortment of vendors booths and the Expo building was surrounded by many local Vehicle Co.’s Cars. Trucks, Trailers and ATV’s. Saturday morning, although cold and overcast, was dry, then a small shower occurred about 9:30, the sun brightened the fairgrounds and the crowds came. Today, over 5000 spectators viewed the show, the vendors and voted for their show favorites. Our raffle ticket sales were very brisk, show apparel sales were busy and at times, the aisles were full of patrons roaming the displays, taking photos, chatting with owners, friends and our club members.

The RVSR members say a “Special Thanks” to Tom ‘MR. Pulled Pork” and Mike/Alma LaPlante for cooking all the ‘Hot Dogs’ at the show. We also extend our thanks to the Corvette Club, the Car Nutz, the Rogue Valley
Chevy Club and the Jefferson State Club for their participation and help. Sunday it was again overcast in the early am, a mainly cold, dry morning with viewers arriving after breakfast meals and church services. There was a steady line of spectators most of the day, the show T’ees sold out, Raffle Tickets did well, a huge number of tickets sold on member Alma Gates annual quilt, made from former show T’ees, as vehicle owners waited for the awards ceremony. Chairman Bert Roberts began the presentations promptly at 3:30PM with a short speech from the CDRC director to tell us how the monies were spent to help the handi-capped children in So. OR.The Alma Gates quilt winner was chosen, the Raffle Winners were selected, the Kids bikes were given out and we swung right into the Major Award Winners for the 35th Annual Rod & Custom Show, the winners are as follows:

The RVSR members wish to extend our thanks to all the Show Entrants, the Show Sponsors, the Business Vendors and the Expo management for all their help to make our 35th Annual Event another super show. With all show expenses paid, this year’s donation to the CDRC is $31,000. This amount brings the clubs total to over $500,000 we have raised to aid their care for handi-capped children in Southern Oregon.

For those of you who missed it, you’ll have to catch next years.  We had a wonderful time!  We had 26 street rods, 1 muscle car and 3 daily drivers meet at Joe & Debbie Dauenhauers’, for a total of 64 folks in attendance. The sight must have been wonderful, as there were neighbors all along the way coming out to wave us on.

It was a beautiful day and we drove up to Howard Prairie Marina for Ice Cream.  The woods were beautiful and the air fresh.  We followed our fearless leader home and he tried to fool us.  He turned left towards Klamath Falls.  (I think he just wanted to see if any of us would notice!)

We headed back to Ashland to Joe & Debbie’s and had a wonderful BBQ and potluck with farm fresh fruit and veggies.  It was a wonderful evening with a slight breeze and we all relaxed for a while before bidding our wonderful hosts farewell.

At the ‘07 So. San Francisco Rod & Custom show, our ’40 Ford Custom Conv. was sited right across from ‘Candy Apple Joe’s booth. After we ‘d got all set up, he came over to inspect our paint. We chatted awhile then he took me to his desk gave me one of his personal T shirts and invited us to his own show in Auburn, CA. I was thrilled to meet him as he’d been an idol of mine since my teen years.

In 2010, a group of RVSR buddies were going there so Chan ‘n I planned to go too. Due to her health concerns, we were unable to make the trip but had registered. In Aug. 2011, Joe called me in BC and again invited us to attend, I was honored, with Chan’s help, made all the arrangements to go. As she wasn’t up to it. I invited pal, Bill Townsend to accompany me, he agreed in a heartbeat!!!

We left BC on 09/28 and drove I 5 all day to our home in Central Point, OR. and spent the night. Together, we loaded the ’40 in our trailer, filled the back of the p/u and headed south to CA on I 5 the next morning. Weather was sunny, dry, warm

and we made good time in little traffic to Auburn. With help from a local, we got to the Foothills Motel and checked in. This ‘50s Inn, lacked more than it had going for it, but was quaint, several other invitees had booked here too. Later we were told it was in Chapter 11 which explained why their neon sign flashed “FOO…….Motel”, but it was close to Joe’s digs!!! With a wide open window (no A/C) and a bed-spread we hung over the non-meeting curtains, we sacked out. Bill doesn’t snore, he croons, and lulled me to sleep for the next 3 nights, LOL.

Since we’re to attend an afternoon party at Joe ‘n Maries, we went in a vain search of it. A call to Joe and he told me “Just look for “Pee Wee’s café, it’s right around the corner”. Again, a local that told us how to get there, the café’s real name is “Swee Peas”!!! “Bring your car and come at noon” said our host, We took in downtown Auburn, a quaint one-street city with antique stores, bistros, specialty shops and all the other amenities a traveler needs.

Saturday, we had a late breakfast and drove the ’40 over to Joe’s and parked in a great spot. Many of his other friends began arriving. I was so surprised, the 1st chap I met remembered me from Crackerbox boat racing in the ‘60s, such a small world!!! About 40 assorted rod ‘n customs came, we swapped tales for the next 2 hours til Marie set out a huge bowl of her famous ‘Punch’ to get us going. I’d been warned about it’s ‘Kick’, that 3 glasses were the limit! I nursed mine til lunch was ready. What a spread, sandwiches, salads, devilled eggs, more snacks and it kept on coming. Mike came an hour later with buckets of KFC chicken (like it’s supposed to be), and we filled out plates again!!! On a full tummy, I was able to suck ‘em up!

Us imbibers emptied the punch bowls til they were gone as we traded stories, jokes and who knew who til 8pm.Back at the motel, we were invited to a late dinner with our new friends and off we went. After a great chop house meal, we went to the Karaoke Bar for more drinks, some good entertainment and more yakking. It was after 12 when we hit the hay.

Sunday, up early ‘n off to the fairgrounds, registered and set up in a space on the grass so the car would be in the sun all day. As usual, we met a lot of new car owners, mostly from the cities nearby except for a ‘Poor Boys’ chapter, all the way from Reno, an annual trip for them, most Rat Rods. I’d never seen so many Merc’s from the ’49 to ’51 era of all mod’s and colors. Joe had worked on a lot of them!

The ‘downer’ of the day was when a ’56 GMC helicopter turbine powered P/U fired up and showered over half of us with dried grass ‘n dirt!!! I spent the next hour, re-cleaning our car!!!

At 3pm, we all assembled in the tiered seating, staged area for the awards ceremony. It was well planned, an MC opened with introduction of Joe ‘n Marie, a nice tribute to our host, a photographer ready to take pics, and a raft of awards to give out. In the 1st group, we were called up to receive the ‘Long Distance’ trophy and I was given much praise from Joe for coming “All The Way From BC, Canada”. In the next group. I was again called up to receive the “People’s/Participants Choice” award. To me, this is a great win when selected by your peers. Many

more plaques and some stand-up trophy’s were presented along with a couple of memorials, until almost the last large 3’ custom made one. I was ‘blown away’ as Joe called me up again to receive his personal selection of “Best Paint”!!! He also gave a raving tribute to my pal Tommy Carr as a ‘Master Painter’ of Candy Apple, his fine use of blending, color descending and hi-lighting of the curves on the car.

He also mentioned the detailed graphics, color association, ‘n good use of the ‘40s natural contours. I wish he was there for all the kind words from Joe!!!

It was another thrill for me to receive so many congtrat’s from a lot of the other

entrants as we were packing up. Then, Joe ‘n Marie came by to again thank us for coming, say how much they love our car and ‘Safe Trip Home’ As usual, we were the last to leave the park. At the motel, we loaded up to get on the I 5 early. Thanks to a couple of others, we were warned of the high traffic til 9am. We pulled out just before 9, a jam due to a 3 car accident held us up for half an hour and we’re heading north. A bit of a slow trip up to OR. and pulled in at 4pm.

After unloading the car, Tommy came by and treated us to a steak dinner and a nice visit. Bill and I decided to spend a day with Chan, re-loaded my p/u, relaxed and were ready to leave in the am. It was another sunny day, we made great time driving north, easy thru Portland, Seattle and made BC by 7pm.

I can’t express how enthralled I am to have had this wonderful trip, meet my idol, honored to be awarded so many tributes, spend the week with my good pal Bill, visit with Chan and meet so many new friends…a trip I’ll remember forever!!!

The local ‘Fishwrapper’ advertised a run, right in our back yard, the Twin Creeks Park is less than a mile away from our house, all the proceeds go to charity so our kind of event. After over 3 months of visiting clinics, Dr.s, hospitals and the like due to the ‘Better Half’s’ current condition, a much needed venue was very necessary to retain my sanity!!!

Our ‘Trailer Queen’ ’40 Ford Deluxe Conv. needed to be driven and the all well paved roads to the park promised me no ‘Road Rash’ as long as I led the way. Friday was spent getting it ready, checking all fluids, fresh gas, battery up, start, run in, load with chairs, signs, cooler, camera, check cleaning items, cloths etc. you all know…the usual routine prior to heading to a show, and it’s ready!!!

Rose early Saturday morning, dressed expecting a hot day, backed the car out to the driveway just as neighbor Roy arrived in his fresh ’40 Ford Coupe. We wanted to take an open tent for shade, but the one I have is so large, it wouldn’t fit in either of our cars, so we headed down the road. At the next street, here comes a line of other RVSR club members led by neighbor Crock Hunter. We arrived at the park as a group and all got to park together. Fortunately, they had a push-up open tent cause by 10am it was in the high 70’s.

The large green space grassy area surrounded by nice homes built here in the last 3 years is wide open, not a tree in sight and the show is already sporting about 60 early-bird vehicles. I was ushered onto the grass and although I was to form a new row, ended up finishing the line of 10 Vintage Tractors, LOL. It didn’t bother me as most of the owners are also neighbors of mine. After setting up, Roy and I went to register and got a really nice Goody Bag and an event T shirt too. We got draw prize coupons, checked the vendors, food stands and headed back to our cars. I got out my cleaning cloths and had just started to wipe off fingerprints etc. when my builder buddy, Tommy Carr came up and took over. He polished it from front to back while I was able to chat with several spectators who were ogling the blazing, bright in the sun, Candy Apple paint he’d applied for us. Such a good friend.
It was another plus for us as Tommy had driven his ‘still under construction’ A Tub there for it’s 1st run!!! The frame and running gear is coated with a stunning Lime Green pearl, but the body is still in cream primer. It also commanded a lot of attention with the special body mod’s he’s in-corporated, un-like many others I’ve seen.

Our dash plaque was our award, as it should be at more shows, but if there was a trophy based on “Your ’40 is the Best Car Here’ we’d have won hands down. But it is enough praise for me that so many like the car, the mod’s we’ve done, the colors, the interior by Jerry and the McLean wire wheels (just had to add that remark Tommy).

We joined Crock, Scotty, Gary, Frank, and the ladies in their shade and yakked for a lot of the afternoon constantly checking our tickets to see if we’d won. Roy was one of the lucky ones in our group. A few more RVSR’s were there, Jim Bieg, Mike LaPlante, Steve Olsrud so we were well represented as usual. The smell of frying onions lured us to get lunch so we followed our noses to the cook shack where the local State Police were broiling burgers, very tasty, a good size, came with chips, a cold drink and all the fixin’s for $5 with all the income going to the cause!!!

I went over to the tractor guy’s pop-up for a visit and met more of my neighbors. One of the officers came by and gave us all a freebie cream-cicle. I was invited to buy a tractor, restore it and join their club…thanks guys but I’m all through now, just doing pumps, hi-boys and oilers…well a small trailer too!!!

For the wind-up of the show, the organizers raffled off the right to have your car on next years T shirts…I’ll admit I was interested but after the bidding went over $250, I backed off, final winner bid $400, I think he showed a sweet ’40 Lincoln hardtop. At 3pm, Roy and I cruised home, sat on the back patio and cooled off with a few ‘Brewski’s’

The D.A.R.E. group were pleased that this was the largest turnout they’d ever had and sure they’ve raised a goodly sum for the charity. This was one of the best run local shows I’ve been to and will look forward to attending again, next year. Compiled by Bunny.

Friday morning, 9 AM, cold and foggy, Virgil Lipscomb sends his first crew out to Gate 2 and Steve Mitchell and I begin to direct the first of more than 100 participants and 70 vendors. By noon things are hopping. Al Bowman and his crew are using the forklift and putting up banners. Marv and Larry are settling the vendors, this job went on clear through Sunday. Debbie Dauenhauer and her crew are setting up the t-shirt booth. Bunny Jeboult is busy organizing sponsor awards for sponsors to give to participants. Charlotte and her crew have been working for over three months to obtain these awards. Joe Dauenhauer is buying about $8,500. in cash and coin to get started. Sheree Wenzel needs some in the ticket booth, Debbie needs some in t-shirts and Bill Schweitzer, in the raffle area, needs some also. I’m not sure how much Ron Foster needs over in the car corral but Joe makes sure all bases are covered. Meanwhile, Evey Roberts in the contact/ announcers booth and her crew are checking in participants and handing out the goodie bags that Marilee Mitchell and her people put together. At the request of the fire marshal all cars have to have the gas cap taped shut and the cutoff switch turned off. This keeps Ron Thornton and his bunch busy. Mike and Alma LaPlante are setting up to sell their hot dogs and Tom Sherwood’s pulled pork sandwiches.

By afternoon it is clear that 15 or so of the customs we expected from California aren’t going to make it over the Siskiyous in the snow. It seems every time Dan’s phone rings it is another cancellation. The scramble is on for club cars to fill the missing spaces. Some don’t get filled.

Saturday morning at 9 am the gates open and by noon we are flooded with viewers and are off to the races. John Marvel and his crew are at the exit doors and members of the CASO car club are busy tearing tickets and stamping hands. Now the participants can rest from setting up on Friday and take advantage of Greg Cordova’s (The Old Farm House) food and drinks in the hospitality room. Another great show is put together with lots of hard work.

Sunday morning and it is cold. The heaters that Dan rented to back up the Compton arena’s heaters have been working full time and some of us still need to wear coats.

Our CDRC child, Ethan, his grandparents and great grandparents come around noon and take in all the exciting customs, Mark Daley’s great looking motorcycles and the interesting vendor displays. Ethan has a ball, wearing a show t-shirt, a hat given to him by a vendor and a grin you can see for a mile. He is a lot of help drawing the raffle tickets. Marianne Taylor, CDRC representative, helps out in the t-shirt booth and later talks to us about how special it is to have our help for the kids in Southern Oregon.

Mayors Choice is Dave Lancaster’s 50 Ford Convertible.
Participants Pick #2 goes to Darrly Kuni’s 1937 Chevy Coupe.
Participants Pick #1 is Vaughn Blasingame and his 56 Ford PU.
People’s Choice is the 1957 Pontiac owned by Fred Rieneke.
Best of Show is the 1969 Nova Sedan owned by Dave Plankenhorn.

It is a very successful show! The bills are still coming in but we should have a final tally by March 11th. Like all families, there are squabbles from time to time but everyone has the show’s best interest in their heart. All the tap dancing and sweating behind the scenes pays off. Lots of club members show up to work. Without the help of the club members who do the work the show would be impossible. Bert and Atland and the rest of the show committee thank you.
