Seems we were destined to attend this annual indoor event even tho’ we didn’t register. Our friend
Ray Dalke planned to be there until his trailer was not available and his car became in-operable.
He and I made temporary arrangements to use my trailer, then added my truck and finally he asked
if I could take our car in his place. Due to some work planned on our ’40 conv., I offered to take
our ’46 Ford conv. if they’d accept our driver, they did, so loaded and wheeled up there Friday morn.
It was a tough trip, rain turned into heavy rain, some snow and slow going due to lots of traffic. We
bolstered our vitality with a great breakfast at Heaven On Earth café and arrived at the fairgrounds
just before 1pm. Met up with some of the Stray Angels and Umpqua Flatheads (the host clubs), were
greeted by many of their members as we registered and then directed to a great space.
Our set-up is fairly easy and we took our time as many of the fellows came by to chat, thank us for
coming and talk about the car. Three other RVSR members were also setting up, Butch & Kathy Steele
with their ’34 Desoto, Steve & Linda Olsrud with their ’67 Ford and Ron & Kristine DeVries with their
’35 Plymouth sedan.
As we’d decided to drive back and forth and stay at home, after the set-up was done and a quick wax,
I took photos of the other entrants and headed south at 5pm. Stopped for dinner at the Train Station in
Grants Pass for a tasty Pot roast dinner and got home before 8pm. Due to previous commitments, we
didn’t go up on Saturday.
At 10am Sunday morn, drove to Roseburg, several RVSR club members and some of the Jefferson State group had just pulled in ahead of me. Chatted with them for a bit and went in to see if the car needed dusting. Their cement building with nice clean cement floors and sealed doors sure does away with any dust and their lighting is also a plus to us Pearl Paint owners!!!
Our hosts advised they had a good turnout yesterday and were hoping for another good crowd today. It wasn’t an overflowing throng but a steady stream of spectators for the rest of the afternoon. The draw
for the 50/50, prizes, quilt and 7 trophy awards began sharply at 4pm. From our group, Butch & Kathy won
Peoples choice and Best Display and deserved them both for their efforts. As is customary, at the end of the
awards etc. the place clears out in a hurry. We took out time, got everything broken down, piled up and
waited for room to bring the trailers into the arena, so much easier loading for us old folks!!!
The Steele’s and I traveled down the highway and pulled into the 7 Feather’s Creekside Inn for a nice
Sunday night dinner, good food, good service and reasonably priced. We said our goodbyes and headed
home.
We want to express our thanks to the 2 host clubs who really made us feel welcome, were right on
hand to assist in any way, all if them dropped by to introduce themselves and offer more help and I can’t
count the number of times we were thanked for coming to fill in for Ray. This show is very well organized
and I can’t help but notice the similarities to our Rod & Custom Show. We were invited to come back again
and I intend to mark our calendar for 2011 to take our other car. Thanks again to the Roseburg clubs.
