September 13-15, 2007
For the past 7 years Scott & Diane Ivers of Medford, OR. have planned, arranged and hosted a fun long weekend cruise for ’32 Ford owners only to drive their rides through some of Oregon’s most scenic country, meet other ’32 owners, while dining, partying and traveling together.
Thursday
This years cruise began in Medford, then ran north to Roseburg, Drain and, west across Hwy 38 to the Bliss Hot Rod Bar & Grill at a pre-arranged stop for their pub food and grog as well as a meeting place to greet the other participants coming from as far South as Monterey, California, as far North as the Portland area and from Eastern Oregon. That afternoon everyone checks into our host motel, the Old Town Inn in Florence, Oregon, where pre-registered group rates make the stay pleasant and reasonable. All participants’ pickup “Goody Bags”, Registration Packets, T’s, Henley’s and Sweats, as pre-ordered, and sign up for the planned weekend activities. After a well-deserved happy hour, Thursday dinner is a catered meal at the motel, getting to know each other and perusing the Friday itinerary…
Not only do the cruisers love driving their rides through the beautiful back roads, Oregon is famous for, while enjoying the changing colors of the hillsides, but also this event is very casual permitting all to select where and when they want to eat and relax for the rest of the 1st day.
Friday
A restaurant guide included in the well-planned information packet encourages the group to select a local café for breakfast and then to meet back at the motel by 9:30am. From here, we drive south to “Sandland Adventures” where all bundled up, we’re strapped into a 27 seat giant dune buggy. Our skilled driver takes us on a 20 mile narrated trip, over the sands, through the dunes and along the seashore. An hour and a half of dune hopping, laughing and screaming is about all our (mostly seniors) gang can handle, but it was a great thrill. Back at the ‘Sandland Fun Center’, the next activity is to play their challenging 18-hole miniature golf course. This much fun game is one of the best-planned and well-maintained courses in the Pacific Northwest, and our bunch had a ball testing their prowess, (no pun intended). For the rest of the afternoon, everyone lunched, antique shopped in the numerous outlets and took in the Pioneer Museum. Dinner reservations at the Waterfront Depot provided us with a great variety of chops and seafood entrée’s. After a busy day, most room lights were doused by 9pm!
Saturday
Once again we had our choice of places for breakfast, and then met at the motel for the 100+ mile poker run. The weather was top-down cruising and we couldn’t ask for better as we all scanned the route maps, the instructions and readied for the run. With the locals Pat & Tim Smith in the lead we began the 1st leg which takes us along scenic Rhododendron Drive up to North Jetty to the lst poker stop. Next we continue north over Heceta Beach Road, a short stint up Hwy 101 to the World Famous Sea Lion caves, poker stop #2. We all enjoy an hour long self-guided tour of this really interesting attraction whose present owner is also a street-rodder and a great host. We were greeted with front row Reserved Parking, and 4 parking attendants who placed our cars for camera shots by the owner as well as the local newspaper, which ran a nice article and pictures the following week about our visit. The owner presented each participant with a Sealion gift of a coffee cup, key chainand a CD of our cars parked in front of the caves.
On the Hwy again, our route take us north on Hwy 101 to Yachats Resort for lunch. Once again with our tanks full we hit Hwy 101 South and side stepped East and West to visit Clear Lake, Munsel Lake, Woahink Lake, Siltcoos Lake and several parks along the way. The weather co-operated for a breath taking view from high a top of the mountain over looking Cape Perpetua and south down the Oregon coast. We arrive at the Three River Casino with reserved parking at the front door for the last poker stop. We dine again and enjoy a bountiful buffet in the casino dining room. Two hours later we’re on the road to Florence and arrive at the Rhody Cruiser “Rhody House” and Smith Hot Rod Garage. A narrated tour by Tim Smith shows us one of the top hot rod memorbilia collections in the Northwest. This is where the week end winners receive their awards, prizes are given out, the raffle winners chosen and plans for next years cruise is decided. Selection of the car to go on the T-Shirt for ’08 is chosen by the group, a lot of merriment ensues, silent auctions are wild and everyone ends up a winner. Poker run, minature golf and other games net the winners with prizes of one year AAA membership, a free night at the new Three Rivers Cassino lodge, to be completed in January 2008, and other great prizes. We then all cruised back to the motel for a much-needed rest after another fun-filled day. Some folks walk a block to the wild and crazy night life of Old Town Florence.
Sunday
We are all on our own, most have breakfast at one of the good café’s in Old Town, then hit the Hwy 101 south, thru Coo’s Bay, east over Hwy 42 to Roseburg and head for home.
Once again, Scott & Diane have put together a great outing, expertly planned with interesting stops and places to visit. We’ve all given our cars (and ourselves) a good work-out, viewed some of Oregon’s most beautiful scenery and enjoyed another sunny warm weekend doing the things we love best, cruising and eating!!
Thanks to a lot of Medford businesses, places visited that sponsored this event and the entrant’s donations, the proceeds after expenses amounts to $800 which is donated to the Hillah Shrine’s for their transportation fund. This fund pays for the transportation from Southern Oregon, for the child and one adult, to the Shriners Hospital in Portland where the child receives free medical attention.
Scott and Diane also wish to thank these generous sponsors for their continued assistance to the Deuce Day Run:
Sponsors: Cascade Glass Carvings , AAA, Bob Drake Reproductions, Three Rivers Casino, Sea Lion Caves, Old Town Motel, and Tim & Pat Smith Hot Rod Garage.
