1934 Ford Roadster

above After collecting parts for 4 years, upon my retirement in 1989, began assembly. Within 9 months and almost finished, 1st entered in the Vancouver Motorsport Indoor Show in Vancouver, BC. and won Best Open and Best in Class.

The 1st ‘driven to show’ was the Goodguys Nats in Puyallup, Wa. A regular year-round driver, the car is now 15 years old, has logged over 35,000miles and never been towed.

To get started, the Gibbons glass body, original ’34 frame, TCI 4 bar front suspension and a few small parts were purchased from a friend in North Vancouver, the fenders, top irons, top bows and windshield came from Vintique Parts in Tacoma,Wa. Trips to the Portland Swap, Turlock, Ca. and several other coastal swaps netted a lot more new and used parts.

My 1939 ‘Phantom Phord’

[SinglePic not found]In the late ’90s, for a favor to a buddy, I was given a perfect ’40 Ford frame. I offered it for sale but didn’t get any takers so decided to use up a spare Mustang clip, an 8″ rear end then added Chevy motor and tranny mounts to sell as a rolling chassis. Another friend told me of a nice ’39 Ford 2 door sedan body for sale at an auto repair shop in Surrey, BC.
The next week I just happened to be in that vicinity and decided to take a look. It was in pretty nice shape and the owner had been keeping his staff busy repairing the fenders, deck and hood when they weren’t busy. As I had seen a chopped,Carson topped 2 door in a magazine recently, got the idea I’d like to be the 1st in this area to build one and as the price to me was reasonable, bought it.

A couple of days later I arrived with a trailer to haul it home, Bob said “let the boys here load it on and we’ll go do the transfer”. Wow, a pink slip too, a saving of $500 for me! While at the DMV I noticed the papers were marked ’1939 Ford Cou’. I mentioned to the clerk that there seemed to be an error because the car is a convertible, without a blink, she typed in ‘Conv.’ and I left a happy man!
