As soon as we returned for ‘Snowbirding’ in Medford, Or. it was time to dig out the Boler, check it for travel, load it with all the other stuff we need to take for the long weekend (like food, drinks, toiletries, dog/cat food, fresh water, clean shorts, socks and I’m ready to go!
Then there’s all Char’s stuff, that’s another day of packing, LOL. Seriously, the more times you go through the exercise, the more things you forget to bring, even using a check list!!!
The ’46 is loaded, the animals are in the back, the top is up (darn it, as its such a nice day), the Boler is hooked on the back and we’re down the road. The new multi-level hitch allows us to tow the trailer level to the road, looks a lot better and is easier to on/off load too.
We cruise through our small town of Mission, BC amidst a number of honks, whistles, waves and thumbs-up as we wend our way along the scenic north side of the Fraser River towards Albion, BC where we turn off the highway and enter the loading area for the ferry across it.
After a short wait while we walked the dog, met a lot of other ‘ferryers’ and answered a lot of questions re: the age of the Ford, who did the work, where we got the trailer, where we were going etc. we finally were ushered on and took the 15 minute cruise across the ‘Mighty Fraser’.
The RV park is only a half mile from the ferry slip and we’re at our site in a few minutes. It is apparent as we pull in, that more upgrades and additions have been done to this beautiful riverside park since last year. We drove straight to our space, placed the trailer, un-hooked and began the task of connecting to the park facilities (all new, all amenities and well placed), upping the awning (one of the hardest things to do without losing it), then setting out all our Route 66 and Coke paraphernalia. Sounds easy eh? well, try to do it with the ‘other half’ telling you what to do next (after I set it up to begin with and think I know the routine), all the other ‘earlybirds’ who got there in the am dropping by to say ‘Hi’ and wanting to chat, the park Ranger wanting to check your reservation and hook-up equipment, the ‘Wagon-Master’ dropping by to check if you’ve paid and other RV’ers wandering in to see what the heck you have here!!! But, don’t get me wrong, the foregoing is all part of the fun, the pleasure of owning a rig that attracts attention, the opportunity to meet new people/friends and ask them to join our great group and tell them of fun times we all enjoy.
All during the afternoon, the spaces continue to fill with big & small Bolers, Trilliums, Escape trailers and new Escape 5ths (the new Trillium look-alikes manufactured right here in the Fraser Valley) a few Scamps (the Ca. copy of the Boler), Casitas (the other Ca. copy of a Scamp) Aero’s, Big Foots and a ‘Honey 1300’. In spite of the inclement weather, this gathering proved to be the biggest attendance we had received to date. ‘Eggers’’ came from Victoria, BC, the lower mainland, the Interior of BC, Wa. State and as far south as Tigard, Or. (or is Lake Oswego further away?). We chowed down on fried chicken and salad, sat around and yakked til 10pm and hit the sack early after a busy day for us old folks.
Saturday after 10am, is ‘Show & Tell’ day when all our campers and other RV’ers roam the sites to view the different units, the theme they’ve used , the accents added, the trick items purchased, the color schemes, the mechanical additives and just to say hello, introduce them selves, talk trailers, get ideas, learn of other suppliers, swap lies and make friends…the whole basis of the event. This activity carrie’s on til the late afternoon when our Wagon-Master Craig calls us all together (in the hall this year due to a small afternoon shower) for the usual intro’s,
discussion re: the next meet and awards of some items donated by various suppliers.
Char Doug, Sandy and I displayed the T shirts we had designed using a new meet logo. It was eagerly accepted and we began taking orders. As this newly renovated park with the latest, modern facilities has the best rates, the nearest location for the most of our attendees, the most accommodating park hosts around, it was a unanimous decision to return here again for our fall meet. Bev & Ron won the BarBQ and we all lined up for the great ‘Pot Luck’ dinner hosted by Carole Hale. The light rain quit and many of us gathered at Doug & Sandy’s space where some had ordered in pasta and pizza, to sit around the campfire and chat away the evening. Our Boler has the most comfortable cushions that make into the bed and we get a great sleep on them in the cool of the night.
Sunday we walked over to the Camper’s Roost, the in-park café where Dennis has again come over just to make up pancakes, Canadian bacon, scrambled eggs with home fries and toast as a special breakfast for our large group. Back at the campsite, the rain is holding off as we all break camp and ready for the cruise home. Char and I are busy taking last minute orders for the T shirts we had designed and as usual, were one of the last to leave and reluctantly at that cause the sun was out and we enjoyed a pleasant trip up the old Fraser Highway through Langley, Aldergrove and Abbotsford to our Mission home. We put the Boler away, unloaded the animals, the food stuff’s and completed the swell weekend by going to town for a ‘Chinese Food’ dinner at our favorite restaurant who really appreciates it when we bring the convertible and park it out front. The next meet is planned for Sept. 12th to the 14th.
’08 FALL Glass Egg meet Sept. 12 – 14 , ‘08
This now annual get-to-gether was a blue-print of the Spring Meet with the great exception
being the fantastic weather for the whole weekend. We left home in the late am towing the Boler with our new custom Ford p/u…reason being the ’46 convert is getting a new engine.
Once again, every reserved space was sold out and we even had a few in the overflow area.
At this event, several attendees were there for the 1st time, more came towing their rigs with modified cars and a lot of recently re-built units were displayed. We distributed all the new T shirts we had made and it was neat to see all our campers wearing them proudly
On Saturday, Reece and Tammy of Escape Trailer Mfg. hosted a noontime ‘Open House’ at their plant in Chilliwack where those attending were treated to a burgers and dogs lunch.
The group meeting selected returning here for the spring meet and set the date for May 8, ’09. Char and I introduced our latest idea for the group, name tags, described the style and again got a unanimous approval. Over 75 members have since requested the pins. The Pot Luck dinner was held on the lawn under a beautiful blue sky, warm sunny afternoon and ‘no mosquitos’!!!
It was another fun gathering with more new people attending from both BC and Wa., new
rigs to view and more ideas for things to do at our events…looks like we may need a plan-ning committee???
